The history of The Rural Alberta Advantage dates back to their 2005 founding in Toronto, Canada. That same year, The Rural Alberta Advantage released their first demo and then released a self-titled EP a year later. They self-released their full-length debut album in 2008, and it caused such a stir that they were picked up by a record company, who re-released the album.
Once The Rural Alberta Advantage released their album on a label, their popularity began growing leaps and bounds. Helping their rise to fame was an appearance at the famed South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas in 2009. Both critics and fans couldn't get enough of their sound, which made The Rural Alberta Advantage tour dates favorites among indie rock fans.
