Mary Chapin Carpenter was born on February 21, 1958 in New Jersey but spent some time growing up in Japan. Her father encouraged her from a young age to play her music at talent nights and by 1986 while she was studying at Brown University, Carpenter became a local star. In 1987, Carpenter released her debut album Hometown Girl. It was her 1992 album Come On Come On that had hits like "Down at the Twist and Shout" and "I feel Lucky."
