Tokyo-born Keiko Matsui started playing the piano at a young age and found influences in Stevie Wonder, Rachmaninov and Maurice Jarre. Composing by the time she was a teenager, Matsui eventually studied at the Yamaha Music Foundation before developing a new age group and branching out on her own.
Keiko Matsui released her debut album in 1987 and signed a record deal with MCA later that year. Today an internationally recognized contemporary jazz musician and pianist, Matsui has found her niche with instrumental jazz-pop albums like A Drop of Water, Under Northern Lights and more. She gained international success once she saw crossover achievement, and continues to record and tour constantly.
