The country and alternative crowds usually don’t mix, but the Cowboy Junkies aren’t your typical country band. In the late 80s, the band began producing its trademark, languid country western music after forming in Toronto. Guitarist Michael Timmins and bassist Alan Anton founded the band, recruiting Timmins’ brother Peter and sister Margo for drums and vocals, respectively. The band has become known by Margo’s ethereal vocals. Their 1988 album “The Trinity Session,” recorded in one night with one microphone, launched them into the mainstream in the United States. A cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane” became their first major hit.
The band’s most recent release was 2007’s “Trinity Revisited.” For that, the band went back to the same place where they recorded “The Trinity Session,” but had a little help from special guests such as Natalie Merchant and Ryan Adams.
